VISIONS sacred and secular from the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra

The sounds of choirs, angels and Shakers will fill historic Christ Church in New Brunswick on Sunday afternoon May 5, when the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra presents VISIONS. This last concert of the season will include “Shaker Loops,” exciting music from America’s greatest living composer, John Adams, as well as Aaron Jay Kernis’ ethereal “Musica Celestis” and Benjamin Britten’s “Hymn to St. Cecilia” in an exploration of musical ecstasy, both sacred and secular.

Also on the program is a newly commissioned work by Joel Phillips of Westminster Choir College: “Ark of my dreams,” a propulsive song for chorus and string orchestra set to the soaring hopeful poem of the same name by 19th century American poet and musician Sidney Lanier. And the orchestra will perform Franz Liszt’s seldom heard “Angelus,” an impressionistic evocation of the evening call to prayer.

The concert is a joint concert of the NBCO, under the direction of Conductor Mark Hyczko, and the Parish Choir of Christ Church, under its music director John Sheridan.

VISIONS is also the orchestra’s final collaboration with acclaimed Princeton artist Debra Weier, whose painting “Exit” is the inspiration and focal point of the program. It is part of “Reframing Classical Music,” the NBCO’s initiative to redefine the “norms” of classical music by seeking inspiration through the bold work of visual artists. Ms. Weier will be on hand with her painting to speak with concert-goers.

“We are thrilled to be returning to Christ Church with our muse, Debra Weier,” said Maestro Hyczko. “And we are excited to be exploring this music, which runs the gamut from the energetic fervor of a Shaker revival to Liszt’s prayer to Britten’s passionate but non-religious settings of W.H. Auden’s poetry.”

The concert begins at 4 PM. Tickets are $20 ($10 for students) and are available at the door or here. Christ Church is located at 5 Patterson Street, next door to the Church Street parking deck, where parking is free on Sundays.
