Two contrasting highlights of the program are Sebastian Currier's immersive listening experience in "Next Atlantis" and Dmitri Shostakovich's "Chamber Symphony". Written as a remembrance of Hurricane Katrina, Currier samples sounds of water running, barges, and foghorns, and has the stereo surround playback accompanied by the orchestra. Meanwhile, Shostakovich samples earlier works in this adaptation of his famous Eighth String Quartet, resulting in a searing work that is acclaimed as one of the masterworks of the 20th century.
Fleshing out the program is Michael Daugherty's "Strut", a jazzy and fun virtuosic piece for the orchestra, and John Corigliano's lyrical "Voyage", a lush work based on Baudelaire. Once again, the NBCO will premier the work of a up and coming composer, Alexa Canales, who has written a work for us called "Once More".
The concert will take place on Saturday, June 3 at 7:30 PM in the historic space of Christ Church, located at 5 Paterson Street in downtown New Brunswick, NJ.
